Imagine someone in a cave: lost, disoriented, not knowing how to get out, not knowing if getting out is ever going to happen. Now imagine a partner at the cave’s entrance, knowing that someone they care about is wandering around in the cave without resources, without support, without protection from any possible hazards.
If you were the person at the entrance, how likely is it that you would put yourself in a position to try and save your partner? Even with the risk of losing what you have, who you matter to, or who you are? Is there any part of you that would hesitate?
What if you were the one in the cave? How likely is it that someone would come looking for you? Putting themselves at risk to save you? How likely is it that you would want them to?
